Human Nature Garden
The Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park, was opened in June, 2011 by Jean Griffin, a keen supporter of Horsham in Bloom and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable horticulturist who regularly broadcasts on BBC local radio. Opening Day
Regular visitors to the garden may realise that they are surrounded by rhubarb, strawberries, blackcurrants and even Goji berries. There are also the harder to recognise Liquorice, Safflower, Amaranth, Ornamental Rice and a Pomegranate Bush.
Excellent interpretative signs provide information on the uses of Lavender, Bamboo, Borage and Sunflowers.
The garden has flourished, beyond Horsham in Bloom’s expectations.  In other areas of the garden there are many plants connected to cosmetics, soap and dyes which were traditionally used to create the green of Robin Hood’s cloak and the blue Woad for battle.
The trees of the orchard will be laden with fruit in the autumn; plums, pears and many varieties of Sussex apples. In this same area you may recognise a Medlar Tree, a Ginko Biloba and Pine Nut.
If you are passing through the park, detour to admire the decorative metal entrance gates and then go through to see many wonderful plants which sustain us in many ways. If you have visitors, take them to see it, too. They will not be disappointed!
HiB members who tend the garden have chatted to many local residents and visitors from Scotland, Germany, Seattle and Hong Kong. All have been very impressed by this Lottery Funded project. It is your garden. Enjoy!
Did you know the garden can be available for private hire? Please contact HiB Secretary on 01403 215285. Use the same number if you would like to be involved in keeping the garden looking good.
